Goodnight Princess vimeo entry

Vimeo launch web video awards and festival!

The Vimeo Awards,”…honors the best in online video….”. The Vimeo Festival will be held in New York City on October 8th and 9th. They were launched in April 2010 and opened for nominations and submissions on June 4th 2010.

Goodnight Princess: slow burn goodness

Even though it’s been weeks since we wrote and uploaded Goodnight Princess, it has often been on my mind. People we’ve never met before contacted us about it and I’m really proud of what we achieved. It intrigued and moved people, and the last scene still makes me tear up. We were looking for a suitable outlet so Goodnight Princess is now submitted to the Vimeo Awards in the ‘Narrative’ category. If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s the Vimeo submission:

Goodnight Princess from worldofhiglet on Vimeo.

We edited it slightly from the Omnibus on YouTube to remove the credits at the end of Acts 1 and 2. This is the description:

“Goodnight Princess” is a micro-shortform three act Internet Play, exploring love, loss and silly voices.

It uses one-take shots, minimal effects and a proscenium view to best mimic a play-like setting. By not showing the actor’s faces, the story unfolds with only the audience’s interpretation of events.

The final reveal has moved viewers to tears.

Note: This video was originally released act by act over three weeks on EvilWorldofHiglet’s YouTube Account (youtube.com/user/evilworldofhiglet).

We’ve submitted, but you can nominate any eligible video

In order to submit a video yourself you need a Vimeo account. But you don’t need a Vimeo account to nominate a video from any video platform – just read the eligibility guidelines and go ahead. Nominating a video doesn’t submit it, but it does bring it to Vimeo’s attention.

So, for example, if you wanted to nominate Goodnight Princess, you would follow this link:

http://vimeo.com/awards/submit/nominate

and paste this link into the box:

http://www.vimeo.com/13409542

The category is ‘Narrative’, which is the default so you shouldn’t have to change it.

Easy! 🙂

The next steps

It was the success of this video in terms of story telling that convinced us that we needed to look again at the equipment we have. Our camera is 11+ years old, we can’t source a battery for it so it has to be connected to the mains (and it’s from the UK so there is also a plug adaptor on it). We recorded this (and our other recent videos) direct to our little 13″ Macbook for editing in iMovie with audio post-production in GarageBand. It worked, but because we needed to record at night for atmosphere, the light levels meant the finished product is grainy.

Coming soon…

Our new webseries is already in pre-production. The scripts are mostly done, the two teaser trailers are being shot in the next couple of weeks and everything is in place. But we need new equipment. We were lucky enough to receive some funding from an anonymous donor (THANK YOU AGAIN!) that went towards a new camera but with that comes a whole new set of problems. The Macbook’s hard drive is nearly full and iMovie can’t do everything we want to do for the new show. We can now record in HD but can’t edit it properly. We only have one Mac so only one of us can work at a time….

Time to take the plunge

So we are going to do something about it. We can’t fund the next series entirely by ourselves so we will be setting up an Indigogo account and will be launching a fundraising campaign very soon. Jeff Koenig has just completed a wildly successful fundraiser there for his new venture “What is a Webseries?”, a brilliant idea for a site and one that I fully support. He secured his required amount in just days and “What is a Webseries?” will benefit the whole community.

We are just waiting for a costume delivery from the UK so we can complete the teaser and then we are all set to launch the campaign. These are exciting times – we hope you’ll come along for the ride!

HigletSounds – where the good stuff will be at (eventually)

Setting up an empire is hard work – no sooner have you done one thing then there’s twenty other things demanding your attention. And you know what? Sometimes girls just wanna have fun. When we released Goodnight Princess only 3 weeks ago, one of the comments that kept coming up was that people like the theme – were humming it all day. That wasn’t a surprise – I’ve not been able to stop singing it for weeks!

And so, while taking a rest from the day job and all the good stuff coming down the line in the next few weeks, hubby has rustled up a remix that will melt your heart.

Be the first to hear Broken Lullaby (Goodnight Princess Theme)!

To celebrate the release of the Goodnight Princess Omnibus today (all 3 Acts together), we are running a little competition – and it’s so easy to enter:

The first FIVE people to comment on the Goodnight Princess Omnibus on YouTube (follow this link) after 6:00 PM PST today, May 25th 2010 will receive an MP3 copy of the song free, gratis and for nothing. Simple!

Rules:

1. You HAVE to comment on the Goodnight Princess Omnibus on YouTube (follow this link)

2. You need to be subscribed to EvilWorldofHiglet’s channel on YouTube and add as friend so we can send messages to each other (follow this link to go to EvilWorldofHiglet’s channel on YouTube).

If you are one of the first five I will email you via YouTube and arrange to email the song to you. That’s it.

What happens if you want the song but you are not in the first five? Fear not….

CDBaby – everyone is doing it!

Broken Lullaby cover

I love artist that go ahead and get things done. I’ve had the privilege of meeting people like Megan Lynch and Marian Call on Twitter and Friendfeed and their determination has been an inspiration. Being a music industry survivor, we were hesitant to jump back into it again, but CDBaby.com makes it relatively easy. In the next couple of weeks “Broken Lullaby” will be available there under our label, HigletSounds. It’s not live at the moment because it takes time for them to get things set up. So stayed tuned – when it’s all up and running we’ll let you know.

All three Acts – a bitter-sweet eight minutes

A whole Internet Play in under 10 minutes? Yes, you can. Goodnight Princess is an experiment in micro-shortform drama that explores love, loss and silly voices. The separate Acts have already been released  but now you can view them all together in one emotional sitting.

Stayed tuned because this afternoon we will be announcing a competition where you could win a (downloadable) copy of “Broken Lullaby”, a specially-mixed version of the Goodnight Princess theme! We will announce the details here on HigletFilms.com and on @worldofhiglet’s Twitter account.
