Mind My Brains, Darling! Episode 2: How’s Your Father

episodes, news, webseries

Alan Douglas as Fr Aloysius Rambo Guest star this week: Alan Douglas as Father Aloysius Rambo!

This week’s episode is chockful of innuendo and was quite a challenge to film. However, it was an opportunity to work with one of our friends, Alan Douglas. Alan is no stranger to webseries and is creator of The Masked Roger. This week he swaps dreams of world domination for the simple and holy life of a humble priest.

Father Aloysius tends his parish from St Tapioca’s Parish Church, keen to spread the good word. His passion for cucumber sandwiches is his undoing, unfortunately…

Report from Vancouver CSTS: Our World Premiere Screening!

Appearances, news, webseries

CSTS Vancouver 2011 Some of the Silent Auction

We were thrilled to be included in the program of events for the 2011 Vancouver Can’t Stop The Serenity on Saturday. This annual event raises money for Equality Now and local charity, BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre Foundation.

We arrived in Vancouver early to beat the traffic (if not the rain) and we were soon ensconced in the very special space under the H R Macmillan Space Centre. I do love that building!

The Vancouver Can’t Stop The Serenity fundraiser is a whole day of fun with a Dr Horrible Sing-Along, Evil Laugh Contest, Costume competition, Firefly Bingo, Silent Auction, special message from Joss Whedon himself….. and a screening of Serenity! Nestled in there was also screenings from two locally based webseries. ‘Standard Action‘, a ‘fantasy webseries for geeks of all ages’ that is full of fun, action and incredible creatures.

Late for my own screening…
While I was off helping to judge the Costume Contest time marched on, and I was suddenly alerted to the fact that the ‘Mind My Brains, Darling!’ screening was on, so I rushed off in time to see Paul introducing the show. I elegantly ran up to the podium (!) and said a few random words about our filming technique, BodyLine, and then the screening started.

We screened Episode 1, which came out last week, and also premiered Episode 2, ‘How’s Your Father’, guest starring Alan Douglas (Alan hadn’t even seen the finished episode!). When Episode 1 started it was very quiet in the auditorium, but the first laughs came quickly, which was awesome (and a relief!). The animated titles by Efehan went down very well and as people started to warm to BodyLine,

Episode 2 went down very well, with some real belly laughs at the right moments, and it was thrilling to hear the applause at the end! From the comments and congratulations afterwards it was great to hear the parts people liked the most.

Thank you to Gayle and all the people who worked so hard to ensure the even ran smoothly. It took a tremendous amount of effort to get everything ready and it was a great day out. I loved the message from Joss about the coming year, and it was really great to hear the special email from Jewel Staite, too. Talking to Joanna Gaskell and Vanessa Driveness from Standard Action was particularly interesting, too, and I can’t wait for us to meet up again. We will be on the ‘Women in Webseries’ panel at Geek Girl Con, and hopefully will be catching up with each other before then. I don’t often get to talk to other webseries creators in the flesh, but I’m resolving to do it more often. Joanna has also blogged about her day in the Whedonverse.

If you were there, thank you for your kind words and hope you like the red ‘Mind My Brains, Darling!’ business cards we handed out. I had a good day 🙂

Don’t forget that you can see Episode 2 very soon! It will be released at midnight EST today – which is 9:00 PM PST.

rom the set of Mind My Brains, Darling!

From the set of 'Mind My Brains, Darling!'...

A GLORIOUS DAY!!!!

It’s been a busy week, getting the set ready and doing admin-y things necessary so we can get the shooting schedule set up. We were creeping towards the Indiegogo Campaign deadline, too, so I tweeted this morning and then went out for the day, prop buying….

worldofhiglet tweet about indiegogo fundingA few hours later….

…I came back to some seriously amazing news. I checked out my emails and – we had reached our total!!! It took a little while to sink in…we were there! With two weeks to spare! Words can’t describe how I felt- still feel. It’s amazing…and it’s all down to YOU – the people who donated and everyone who spread the word!

THANK YOU!

This has been such a wonderful experience so far. Your generosity, support and help has been fantastic. We are the little webseries that could! We’ve recorded a little video for you tonight as a thank you and I’ll post that tomorrow when I’ve edited it. We filmed it on the set of ‘Mind My Brains, Darling!’ – the set that the money you donated helped pay for. It’s full steam ahead – more news soon!

‘Mind My Brains, Darling!’ now Featured on Indiegogo front page

news, webseries

Mind My Brains Darling now featured on indiegogo front pageIt’s been a wild ride so far!

Nine days after launch and “Mind My Brains, Darling!” is now one of the ‘Featured’ projects on the Indiegogo home page, which is great news! We’ve been bowled over by all the support and encouragement we’ve received from so many people – thank you all! As it stands now we’re just a whisker away from 70% of our total  (wow – while I was writing this we had another donation that took us over 70%!).

VCON 35 in Vancouver next week

We’re deep into preparations for VCON 35, and more of that soon. We’re looking at flyers and promo materials and thinking about what else we can do on a limited budget. If you have any ideas, please let us know. We’ll be posting a couple of flyer designs tomorrow for you to critique since we know you have good taste 🙂 – we want to make sure that if we’re printing up X copies they are the best they can be. And how many copies should we make/take, anyway….? Questions, questions….

Project X Revealed: Welcome to Mind My Brains, Darling!

news, webseries

Mind My Brains, Darling! Indiegogo logoAnd now for something completely different…

Today we launch the first teaser for our brand new webseries, Mind My Brains, Darling, the much-hyped Project X that we’ve been preparing for for the last few weeks. It’s been hard to keep it all quiet and a relief to get it all out in the open (TWSS)! We’re also launching a funding campaign on Indiegogo.

Freshen your boots, Gov’nor?

Making webseries is a cost-effective way to tell your story, but it isn’t free. Even for a budget-conscious pair like us there are inevitable costs. We need a little help to build the sets, finish the props and costuming and upgrade our editing machine. We don’t want to get owt for nowt, though, and there are some rather nifty perks available to anyone who donates $1 or more.

Money isn’t everything

We’d still like your help even if it’s not the folding green stuff. Posting links or widgets on Twitter, Facebook, your blog and other social networks is invaluable, too. The more we can spread the word the better. We know not everyone can donate, but we’d still love to have you on board.

Comments? Questions?

We’d love to hear from you about what we’re doing with the webseries and the funding, so please let us know. Ask away and if you have any suggestions, you comment here or email us: higletfilms at gmail.com.

And now….the pitch!

If you want to know more, go to Indiegogo.com/mindmybrains and see what’s in store. And while you’re there, you might want to  make a quick donation…. 🙂
